Dumb and Dumber To - The story behind the making
05 Oct 2014

By Priya Baboota (Web correspondent)

Los Angeles Times has released an interesting article about Jim Carrey's upcoming movie "Dumb and Dumber To" mentioning how this sequel to 1994 "Dumb & Dumber", took 20 years in the making!

It all started four years ago, when Jim Carrey was sitting in a hotel room flipping channels on the TV when he stumbled across and re-watched one of his funniest movie - "Dumb and Dumber".

Carrey suddenly thought about the directors of this movie, the Farrelly brothers and called Peter Farrelly to talk about making a sequel of this movie to which Peter agreed instantly.

Carrey is glad that the film is finally made because he sees the difficulties in making "Dumb and Dumber To" and mentions the experience as a shift toward a "more corporate, more impersonal, less maverick" culture in today's film business. "There's been a constant feeling of, 'Why isn't anyone making this movie?'" Carrey said, adding, "It got done despite a whole lot of cowardice all the way around."

Even after Carrey signed this sequel, there were serious doubts about the prospects for a comedy from The Ferrellys who aimed largely at the sensibilities of adolescent boys. Moreover, the critics and other cultural cognoscenti were regarding it as some sort of cinematic symbol of the nation's intellectual decline.

Another reason for the movie being delayed in the making was even though The Farrellys, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels were all ready to start the shooting, but Carrey's schedule was packed with other movie projects.

Carrey had resisted making sequels for a long time, but in 2011 he was now eager to revisit "Dumb and Dumber," and the Farrellys brought a script of this movie to New Line Cinema and its parent company, Warner Bros.

Due to constant delay in the approval of making the sequel by lack of enthusiasm of the the executives, Carrey soon grew frustrated and in mid-2012, the actor dropped out of the film, and New Line and Warner Bros. agreed to let the Farrellys take the movie to elsewhere. "Every week someone at Warner Bros. would say, 'We're going to have a green-light meeting about it,'" he said. "Finally I said, 'You're not serious. Goodbye.'"

And now that the movie has finally been made, Carrey, who didn't get a major comedy hit since 2008's "Yes Man," makes no bones about his hopes for the film. "I want it to be a success for everybody: for me, for the Farrellys, for Jeff, for the audience and oh, OK, for the executives too," he said.
