"The Grinch" steals the Box-Office away
19 Nov 2000

According to studio estimates (final figures are only available Monday), "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas" made a whobulous $55.1 million in Friday to Sunday box-office earnings. Playing at 3,127 theaters, the Imagine Entertainment/Universal release had an impressive per screen average of $17,621.

If the estimated figures hold "The Grinch" will be setting a few new records of its own, namely:
  • It'll be the 2nd best opening of the year after "Mission: Impossible 2", which debuted at $57.9 million.

  • It'll be the best ever opening for a nonsequel, replacing "X-Men" ($54.5 million).

  • It'll set new box-office records for Jim Carrey and Ron Howard:
    - Jim Carrey's previous best was "Batman Forever" ($52.7 million)
    - Howard's previous best was "Ransom" ($34.2 million)

  • And it'll be the 5th highest launch in history after:
1- "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace"
    2- "Mission: Impossible 2"
    3- "Toy Story 2"
4- "The Lost World: Jurassic Park"
