Original "Batman Forever" Cut Was Screened, Runtime 158 Minutes
08 Jul 2023

By Eva Arajo (Web correspondent)

Batman has been a character that has withstand the test of time. Many actors have played him through the years, some with better results, others, not so much.

In 1995, "Batman Forever" hit theaters and Jim Carrey starred in it playing the villain: The Riddler. In general the movie was well acclaimed.

In movies they end up shooting a lot of scenes and not all make it to end result we get to see in theaters.

That's why in the last few years a movement about releasing the "directors cut" has been growing and for many fans of Batman Forever, that is a wish too.

On July 1st, filmmaker Kevin Smith showed to a few people the original cut of the movie done by Batman Forever Joel Schumacher at the Smodcastle Cinema in New Jersey, and apparently they loved it.

The version is around 2 hours and 38 minutes and has been described as ""slower-paced," allowing the film to breathe in ways that expand the psychological complexities of its themes. This was a work print that would definitely still require touchups in the VFX department and an added score."

Fellow screenwriter Akiva Goldsman told The Playlist about the cut he saw:

"I saw it recently, and it's funny because there's been a swell on the internet for it, and I stay out of it, mostly. Although, it's got about 35% more psychological realism in it. You know, it's really more about guilt and shame. But the preview audience didn't want it - the world wasn't ready. Joel's first cut had all of it in, and the audience was like, 'Yeah, we just like the part where the guy's funny and he's scary and the big thing' And so, it got cut down into what it is. And it was cool.

According to him it should also be released "Because he died and he died quietlyYou know, there wasn't a lot of honoring him and it would be a nice way to honor him, I think. And I think he'd get a kick out of it."

We are rooting for it to be released too.
