The 56th Annual Golden Globe nominations
24 Dec 1998

According to BPI, on last December 17, Jim Carrey was in a sound sleep when his agent woke him to say he had just been nominated for a Golden Globe in the category Best Actor in a Drama, for his work on THE TRUMAN SHOW. The Golden Globes are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which also nominated Jim Carrey last year for his performance in Tom Shadyac's hilarious comedy LIAR, LIAR.

TRUMAN, along with SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, received a total of six nominations, outnumbering SAVING PRIVATE RYAN by one. Besides Best Actor the categories are, Best Picture - Drama, Best Supporting Actor (Ed Harris), Director (Peter Weir), Screenplay (Andrew Niccol) and Original Score (Burkhard Dallwitz & Philip Glass).

The present nomination has also brought a series of memorable comments from Carrey, among which:

"If I'm still dreaming, I hope I'm not going to wake up suddenly."

"It feels tremendous to be openly accepted when you switch gears."

"I must have done something nice in my past life to deserve this -- like saving someone from a burning building and then going in once more to get their hamster."

It's "either the biggest compliment in the world or another White House smokescreen -- just another way of delaying the impeachment process."

"It was such a leap in my career when 'Truman Show' came along. It's always been a long process for me insofar as recognition goes, but that's OK because you appreciate it when it comes."

"I pulled the sleepers out of my eyes and danced around the room a little."
